I’m making this glossary so that you know more about this choice of study so that you can understand what we do in special care counselling. This glossary is for anyone who wants to learn more about the terms of a special care counselling. He’s gonna have 20 words in that glossary. I found and used my words in documents I received in my technique. These are terms conducive to this future profession.
Adaptation

Defined as supports or services that are not provided to the student population, but that some students with special needs need to meet learning expectations and to demonstrate learning.
Example: We are constantly in adaptation in our lives, especially when we are faced with a situation or when it is new.

Behavioural disorder

Behavioural disorders are major adjustment difficulties that affect several spheres of the young person’s life at the same time (school, family, social, personal, etc.). The three main behavioural disorders observed in school settings are conduct disorder (CD), oppositional provocative disorder (TOP) and attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).
Example: When a child has a behavioural disorder, a special care counselling can work on multiple areas of their life to control their emotions and behaviour.
fr: Les troubles de comportement sont des difficultés d’adaptation majeures qui affectent plusieurs sphères de la vie du jeune en même temps (sphères scolaire, familiale, sociale, personnelle, etc.). Diagnostic

Is defined as the result of an assessment by a psychologist or psychology associate or physician of intellectual abilities, emotional and psychological disorders, and academic performance, including reading, spelling and mathematical skills.
Example: When a child is diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, we are able to know what we are going to have to work with that child.

Difference

Character (a difference) or set of characters (the difference) that distinguishes one thing from another, one being from another.
Example: When a child has an illness or a diagnosis it may be perceived as different because it has different methods or a different path from the others.
fr: Caractère (une différence) ou ensemble de caractères (la différence) qui distingue une chose d'une autre, un être d'un autre.
Difficulty

A thing that is hard to accomplish, deal with, or understand. Defined as temporary barriers to learning that are related to what the person may be going through (difficult socio-emotional conditions, grief, anxiety, economic difficulties, etc.)
Example: When a child has some difficulty we have to work one-on-one with them to develop them.

Diversity

Means the presence of a wide range of human qualities and attributes in a group, organization or society. The dimensions of diversity include ancestry, culture, ethical origin, sex, gender identity, gender identity, sexual orientation, sexual orientation, language, physical or intellectual abilities, race, religion and socio-economic status.
Example: We talk about diversity in the community when a person differentiates himself by some disability in a sphere of his life. (both physical and cognitive).

Empathy

The ability to understand and share the feelings of another.
Example: In my future job it will be important to be emphatic in order to understand the situation of the other.

Equity

Means a principle of fair, inclusive and respectful treatment of all persons. Fairness does not mean that everyone is treated the same, regardless of individual differences.
Example: Equity is important because many people need material to be able to be equal to others. ( provide more tools, more help.)

Handicap

Limitation of activity or restriction of participation in society suffered by a person as a result of impairment of a function or disabling health condition.

Example: An handicap is an inability to do something in your daily life because of your difficulties.

Helping relationship

A relationship established between individuals who act as caregivers to others.
Example: A helping relationship is used to actively listen when someone tells you about their problems so that they can help and understand their situation.

Inability

A physical or mental condition that limits a person's movements, senses, or activities. Loss, disturbance or abnormality that affects the structure of the body or a physical or mental function, and that results from an illness, injury or physiological condition.
Example: The child has an inability to concentrate when in the presence of distraction due to attention disorder.

Example: When a person is different because of his illness, it is important to inform the other people for sensibilisation and her integration.

Intervention

Is defined as an intentional, directed and finalized action that modifies a beneficial interactive process or activity.
Example: When a child commits a prohibited act or expresses himself or herself in an innapropriated way, we have to do an intervention with him or her so that it does not happen again.

The intervention plan is a clinical tool used to plan a series of actions to help a child meet a challenge or difficulty. Part of it is to target a challenge and to come up with a very clear plan to help the child.
Example: We apply an intervention plan to a child who has a psychological or physical difficulty in order to plan goals or challenges for the child.

Example: When a child has behavior problems, we can work on it's emotions.

Rehabilitation

Set of medical, social and psychological measures to enable a person to adapt to a new functional limitation so that he or she can regain as much autonomy and independence as possible.
Example: We use social rehabilitation with a child who has difficulty speaking or interacting with other children on his class.

Special care counselling

Person who works with children or adolescents in difficulty in a school or rehabilitation establishment.
Example: Special care counselling is a person who works one-on-one with children in difficulty of any kind in order to increase their development for make them better.

Support

Coaching is a supportive approach that can be applied to an individual, a group of individuals or a community. The goal is to develop professional skills through the use of “best practices”. This approach of support requires the accompaniment a commitment to reflect, to analyze and to have a critical view on their practice; to engage in action, in experimentation and in critical reflection on their actions.
Example: Spent time with a child to understand the difficulties they are going through so as to give them advice to help them overcome these difficulties. Be able to be physically and mentally present for them.
fr: L’accompagnement est une approche de soutien qui peut s’appliquer à une personne, à un groupe de personnes ou à une collectivité. Le but est le développement des compétences professionnelles par l’utilisation des « meilleures pratiques ». Cette approche de soutien demande aux accompagnés un engagement à réfléchir, à analyser et à avoir un regard critique sur leur pratique; à s’engager dans l’action, dans l’expérimentation et dans la réflexion critique sur leurs actions.
